Masana Empowerment services Progress report – Township Energy Fund
Masana Empowerment Services (EMS) was appointed by The Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) in April 2024 to support and disburse the Township Energy Fund to SMME in the Free State ( Matjhabeng Municipality in Lejweleputswa District and Dihalabeng Municipality in Thabo Mufutsanyane District 6 months.
Key Activities
1. Steering Committee Meetings

  • Regular meetings with representatives from the Matjhabeng municipality, Dihlabeng municipality, SMME Business Association and local energy experts.
2. Implementation and Interventions
  • Application Process: Coordinated by Masana team and municipality officials.
  • Fieldworkers: Five local youth appointed to assist with site verification and tracking progress.
  • Selection Criteria: Included business registration, impact of load-shedding, youth and women ownership, and job retention potential.
  • Assessment and Installation: Conducted by Masana team and technical partners, followed by installation and training on energy solutions.
Impact
  • Businesses Supported: Over 100 SMMES in both municipalities with energy equipment and training
  • Feedback: Positive responses from beneficiaries, highlighting motivation to grow and innovate.
  • Employment: Significant impact on local employment, especially for youth and women.
Conclusion
  • The project has positively influenced local economic development, with beneficiaries reporting increased business sustainability and potential for growth.
